What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the inflammation of gums (i.e. they are red, puffy, and bleed easily). This is the first sign of a gum issue that can lead to gum disease. Read below to learn more.

Luckily gingivitis is reversible, and with prompt treatment, your gums should go back to normal and stay that way with regular maintenance.

There can be many causes of gingivitis, the main one being poor oral hygiene leading to an accumulation of plaque and tartar around the teeth which irritates the gums.

Some other causes for gingivitis are: dry mouth, overhanging or defective fillings, hormonal imbalances, a side effect of certain medications, mechanical trauma.

See your dentist or hygienist to have your gums assessed. They will be able to determine the cause and the treatment required.
